Arches, Day 2

Well, today went much better than yesterday. I slept in, ate a light breakfast, chugged a bunch of water and headed back for Arches around 11. I had a few things I wanted to see, then I was just going to head out. I had planned on camping out, but given how yesterday went I thought it best to not stay in the heat all day and night. I went and packed up the tent and swung by Sand Dune arch, a short 0.3 mile round trip. I went and looked at the Fiery Furnace viewpoint where I should have been at 9am for the hike, but I wisely passed. I took the drive down to the Windows, probably the second most popular area of the park. There are several windows that can all be hiked in less than a mile or so. I also swung by the Delicate Arch viewpoint. This is the hike I really wanted to make and if I had to do over again, I would have done it yesterday. It's 3 miles roundtrip, and I just didn't want to get out there and sweat for another hour and a half while still getting over whatever I had last night. This is the arch that defines Arches, and is on the back of most Utah license plates.

Since I was passing up another camping night and had nothing else to do, I decided to go ahead and start heading west. I made it to Hurricane, Utah, just outside Zion National Park. Since I've cut 4 hours off my driving time for tomorrow, I'm going to get up early and see how much I can see there before noon. I have no clue what is there. After that, it's off to Anaheim. Pictures to come in the next couple days.

On a side note, I had a big time craving for a waffle from the Waffle House this afternoon. There was none on the 350 miles of interstate I covered today. You can't go 20 miles in Arkansas without coming across one. I went over 100 miles on I-70 without even coming across a gas station. If you ever are headed west on I-70 and come to Green River, Utah...stop and get gas!

  1. That is true. We are big on Waffle House. That's funny you craved food from there.
