Field of Dreams

Anyone who has anything to do with baseball must eventually make the trek here.  The “Field of Dreams” movie site is located just outside Dyersville, Iowa.  It’s open 7 days a week April through November.  Free admission.  Free parking.  There’s a souvenir stand that’s hard to stay away from.  To me, the only thing it lacks is a hot dog stand.

The majority of the land the field is on is owned by Don Lansing, and his family has owned this land for over 100 years.  It’s actually up for sale now!  Part of left field is owned by someone else.  They’ve tried really hard to not commercialize this place too much.  They hosted some big events in the past but shy away from that now.  I think you can have a little birthday party here, but no weddings.  Not sure about funerals.

There’s not a whole lot to do here.  Just sit and watch the kids running around the field.  You can sit in the same bleachers from the movie.  Apparently, there is even a carving in the bleachers that reads “Ray loves Amy” that Costner carved in during filming one day.  I missed that.  I did take a picture of the top of the bleachers because that’s where the hot dog scene took place.

The house.  It was modified some for filming.  The porch swing is not the one from the movie--the one from the movie was rented from someone in town.
The top of the first base bleachers.
I could not find Shoeless Joe or Moonlight Graham or Terence Mann.
This kid was the star of the day.  The only bad thing about him was the Kerry Wood jersey he was wearing.  Poor kid.
I stayed the night in Dubuque, Iowa, about a half hour away.  I ate at a place called “Mario’s” in the downtown area.  Apparently, it is the same place the filming people ate at the night before they went driving around to look for the perfect farm to build a ballfield on.  Mario was there.  He had just returned from Italy.  I couldn’t understand a word he said.

It’s worth a trip to come here.  It’s going to out of the way no matter what, because it’s not on the way to anywhere.  But, it’s worth it.  Just go.

“It reminds us of all that once was good...

...and it could be again.

People will come, Ray.

People will most definitely come.”
